Voices from the Past

Growing up as a kid, I loved watching this request program on Tv.

Sorry, my brain is all fuzzy now, can't remember the name of the program. Anyway, my love stemmed from the fact that I'll hear Edna Ogoli's Happy Birthday song.

How I wished I'll wake up to someone playing that song to me on my birthday. You see Edna Ogoli had this beautiful voice, she gave out this aura like she was your big aunt, telling you not to worry and that everything will be alright. Maybe it's because she had lots of kids in her music videos.

Tiwa Savage once caused an uproar when she insinuated that there were no pioneer African female artists for women to look up to till her time. A long list of pioneer female artists was readily made available to her. From Brenda Fassie to Onyeka Owenu, Miriam Makeba, Edna Ogoli, Christy Essien Igbokwe, etc.

But maybe the fault is not Tiwa's, maybe it's the way our history I've been told. It's hard enough for old-time greats to get a mention here, and maybe harder when they are females.

But some of us still remember, their sonorous voices still take us down memory lane. Telling us that in the final analysis, our reality is not so different from theirs.
